Direction-based municipal corporations in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has approved a major administrative reorganization of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), doubling its zones from 6 to 12 and expanding circles from 30 to 60 after merging 27 urban local bodies.

Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao issued the order on December 24, 2025, restructuring GHMC to better manage a population of over 1.34 crore across 300 newly delimited wards.

The reorganization follows the government’s December 2 decision to merge 20 municipalities and 7 municipal corporations into GHMC, expanding its jurisdiction. The previous six-zone structure was inadequate for the increased administrative workload.

The GHMC Commissioner reported that the merger required further decentralization to ensure uniform administration, better service delivery, and greater convenience for citizens.
