What explains over 1,000 Prajavani grievances stuck in unclear status categories?

HYDERABAD: In a disclosure under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) admitted to receiving over 74,000 complaints through the Prajavani grievance portal between January 2024 and January 2026. Nearly 600 cases remain pending, and over 1,000 others are stuck in ambiguous status categories.

The response, provided by the GHMC’s Public Information Officer on January 22, 2026, was in reply to an application filed by Hyderabad based RTI activist and project manager at Yourti.in  Kareem Ansari. Ansari sought clarity on the volume, status, and handling of public grievances lodged on the centralised portal.

Speaking to HyderabadMail, Ansari said, “I filed this RTI to understand how seriously GHMC is treating public grievances. The figures show that while a large number are resolved, hundreds are languishing”.

According to the information provided, a total of 74,112 complaints related to GHMC were registered on the Prajavani website between January 1, 2024, and January 22, 2026. Of these, 5,264 have been marked Resolved by Officer, 529 have been Closed by Citizen, 742 are Submitted for sanction, 596 are listed as Total Pending, and 280 complaints fall under “Other Status”.

What has raised eyebrows is the category of Other Status, a vague classification that accounts for nearly 300 complaints whose fate remains unclear.

In response to a pointed query about the lack of timely status updates on the portal, the civic body offered a terse defence, “The status updates are being updated on the Prajavani website from time to time by duly obtaining the approval/sanction of the competent Authority.”
