Musheerabad Residents Frustrated by GHMC Road Work Delays

Hyderabad: Commuters in Musheerabad and Mansoorabad divisions are facing severe inconvenience as the roads in several neighborhoods have been dug up by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

When the GHMC workers started digging, residents were happy that the new roads would make their lives easier. But now they’re just frustrated. The road work has been paralysed in several areas.

There are rumors that some contractors engaged in the road construction work have submitted bills years after completing the project and civil engineers have approved them after taking their share.

In January, GHMC Commissioner K Ilambarithi ordered an inquiry into certain bills submitted by contractors during the last year and some of the bills submitted to the civic body were for works sanctioned eight years ago. The discrepancy has raised doubts about irregularities, as the bill submitted amounts to more than Rs. 160 crore.

Despite the completion of tender processes for various roads at the circle and division levels, some remain unfinished even after six months. In some places, contractors have dug up roads without permission, leaving them worse than before. Now, people are demanding that the central office revoke the licenses of these contractors and punish the engineers for their alleged negligence.

Two years ago, tenders worth Rs. 50 lakh were issued for road construction in two streets of Vivekananda Nagar colony under Mansoorabad division. The contractor dug up the mud road and laid a mixture of gravel and sand. Later, engineers halted the work citing complaints about the colony layout.

About two and a half months ago, the civic body allocated Rs. 20.70 lakh to build a concrete road in Bharat Seva Samaj street, Musheerabad division. The contractor dug up the old CC road in the street and dumped debris on the street and disappeared, leaving the road construction unfinished.

Road excavation was carried out for an underground drainage project worth Rs. 8 lakh in Azhar Galli of Musheerabad, but the work remains incomplete to this day.

Similarly, road construction in front of Arya Samaj school was abruptly halted in Mallayya street, Kawadiguda division.
