HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has taken up work on a Model Footpath along the high-pedestrian corridor from Ramanaidu Studio at Road No. 79/82 Junction to BVB Junction at CVR Channel, Road No. 82, Jubilee Hills. The stretch falls under Circle 18 of the Khairathabad Zone. The project began on November 24, 2025, and is slated for completion in four months.

Recycled plastic paver blocks to replace conventional tiles

The ₹1.68-crore project covers 1,000 metres on the left-hand side and 500 metres on the right-hand side. GHMC said the initiative is aimed at improving pedestrian safety, ensuring seamless mobility and enhancing the streetscape in one of Jubilee Hills’ busiest corridors.

A major component is the use of recycled plastic paver blocks in place of concrete tiles. These blocks contain 65–70% post-consumer plastic waste, including multilayered packaging, low-density polyethylene and linear low-density polyethylene. The rest of the mix includes fillers and mineral additives.

The pavers, with a compressive strength of at least 35MPa, are designed for heavy pedestrian load. They come in a zig-zag modular form measuring 225mm x 112mm x 50mm and are manufactured using recycled HDPE and PET. According to officials, the material diverts large quantities of plastic waste from landfills.

Footpath to feature 10kWp solar grid and shade canopy

The Model Footpath will also include a 10kWp solar grid system. The installation will use 600Wp or higher solar modules from approved brands such as Renewsys, Saatvik and Emmvee, along with 10kW grid-tied inverters from Solis, GoodWe and Sungrow.

The system will be mounted on MS box-pipe structures of 8–10ft height and equipped with an automated module-cleaning mechanism. It will include AC and DC distribution boxes, lightning arrestors and an earthing system. The solar canopy is expected to provide shade to pedestrians while contributing clean power to the grid.

Tactile pavers to support inclusive mobility

The Corporation said the footpath design incorporates tactile pavers and guidance bars to help visually challenged pedestrians navigate safely. The measure is part of GHMC’s push for accessible, barrier-free public spaces.

Officials said the project is aligned with the civic body’s broader effort to strengthen walkability, expand non-motorised transport and promote sustainable urban design across Hyderabad. Work on the corridor is being expedited to meet the planned deadline.
