Lumbini park entry charges draw criticism as renovation work continues

HYDERABAD: A visit meant for children’s fun and play turned into disappointment. Consumer rights activist and Telangana State President Ramagiri Hari Babu criticized the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for charging entry fees at Lumbini Park even though many facilities are under construction.
Furthermore, in a formal complaint to GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karan, Hari Babu said families pay fees but get little or no recreational value in return. Hari Babu questioned the admission policy at Lumbini Park. He told HyderabadMail that the lakeside park is still under renovation, and many amenities are incomplete or closed. Despite this, the park still charges an entry fee of Rs 30–40 per person. Families are not told about the construction before they buy tickets.
He added, “Collecting an admission fee makes visitors expect the promised amenities,” Hari Babu said. “When we pay, we expect the service. If construction is ongoing, why allow visitors into Lumbini Park at all?” he asked.
Moreover, he said families plan outings and budgets because they expect a fully working park. Finding facilities closed or under renovation shows poor service standards.
As a result, Hari Babu formally asked the GHMC Commissioner to take one of two actions at Lumbini Park. He said the park should either be closed to fee-paying visitors until all renovations are finished and amenities are open, or entry fees should be waived during construction. He also wants clear signs at the entrance to inform visitors about ongoing work.
As President of the Telangana State Consumer Organization, Hari Babu said these are not just administrative mistakes but violations of consumer rights. “When you charge for a service, you must deliver what you promise, whether it’s a ride on a swing or a view of a fountain,” he said. Hari Babu urged the GHMC to act immediately. He said children deserve safe, working playgrounds.
