Ghmc Takes Lead To Recharge Ground Water In Hyderabad

Habsiguda: While there is a depletion of groundwater levels in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is taking steps towards combatting the same. GHMC tied up with The Rain Water Project with an aim to help increase the ground water level and through a unique project called, Shallow Aquifer project.

As of now, a pilot project is being undertaken by the GHMC and an awareness camp has been conducted regarding the same by the GHMC officials on Tuesday. GHMC said that it has taken up ‘Shallow aquifer recharge project ‘ on pilot basis, as part of AMRUT scheme under Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. And National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) is the nodal agency to implement this project.

Revealing details about the areas, the GHMC note said that “Five municipal parks have been selected in the city to take up the project on pilot basis. Two parks have been selected in LB Nagar zone. They are Kakatiya park at Habsiguda and E-sector park at Sainikpuri.

What is the Shallow Aquifers Project about?

Explaining the project, GHMC Said, “The concept of the project is to drill shallow water injection borewells to a depth of 100-120 ft. and pump out the water in the shallow aquifers so that the layers below will get recharged whenever there is rainfall, collecting water from the surrounding watershed, channelling the water through recharge pits. This will recharge the underground layers, increasing the water table. The project is being implemented with the help of agency ‘The Rainwater Project.’”
