HYDERABAD: The Telangana government on December 25 officially notified the expanded Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, making it the largest municipal corporation in the country with 300 wards spread over 2,000 sq km.

The earlier GHMC covered about 650 sq km with six zones, 30 circles and 150 wards. Following the merger of 27 urban local bodies, the civic body will now have 12 zones, 60 circles and 300 wards. Officials said the expanded GHMC is comparable in size to Mauritius and about 2.5 times the area of Singapore.

To oversee metropolitan and urban development within Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority limits, the government has created a new post of chief secretary (metropolitan area and urban development) and appointed Jayesh Ranjan. Commissioners have also been appointed for the newly created zones.

Apart from the existing zones of Charminar, Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Secunderabad, Khairatabad and LB Nagar, six new zones have been added — Malkajgiri, Uppal, Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Golconda and Quthbullapur.

The municipal administration and urban development department said the population under GHMC has now crossed 1.34 crore, necessitating further decentralisation to ensure uniform administration, improved service delivery and convenience for residents. The delimitation of wards was also linked to preparations for the decennial Census scheduled for 2026–27.

Officials said details of the new ward boundaries have been displayed on notice boards at circle, zonal and GHMC head office buildings.
