GHMC Clears Encroachments Faster; Protests Stop Work in Some Areas

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) intensified its citywide encroachment removal drive on April 4, triggering protests and tension in areas such as Goshamahal, Rajendranagar, and Secunderabad.
Commissioner Inspects Work
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan inspected the demolition drive at Jambagh in Goshamahal. He reviewed the situation on the ground and directed officials to carry out the work in a planned and orderly manner.
Focus on Traffic and Public Spaces
Officials said the drive aims to reduce traffic congestion and protect public spaces. They added that GHMC will continue efforts to keep roads clear and improve urban mobility.
Action Near Secunderabad Railway Station
In Secunderabad, GHMC teams cleared encroachments from footpaths near the railway station. The Telangana High Court directed authorities to identify and remove encroachments and ensure space for pedestrians.
Teams used excavators to dismantle illegal sheds and small structures, while police supported the operation.
Protests in Rajendranagar
Tension rose in Rajendranagar’s Aranghar area after officials demolished shops run by small traders. Shopkeepers claimed officials did not give prior notice and behaved rudely.
Police deployed heavy security as traders staged protests.
Standoff at Monda Market
At Monda Market in Secunderabad, traders tried to stop the demolition and blocked machinery. GHMC teams withdrew for some time as protesters gathered near the local police station.
Clashes in Old City
Clashes broke out in parts of Goshamahal and Murgi Chowk, where traders confronted GHMC staff and police.
Several shop owners said officials did not give them enough time to remove their belongings before the demolition began.
Bulldozer Pulled Back at Madina Market
During the drive in Madina Market, political leaders intervened and forced GHMC teams to pull back the bulldozer.
Authorities have not responded in detail to the allegations. However, officials said they will continue the drive in other parts of the city.
