No More Dumping! GHMC to Launch Doorstep Pickup for Old Furniture, Mattresses
HYDERABAD: After launching e-waste and divine items collection drives, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is preparing to start a doorstep pickup service for old mattresses and furniture.
The new service will help residents dispose of bulky household waste safely and responsibly. People can request a pickup by sharing their location and basic details about the items. An authorised GHMC team will collect the waste from their doorstep.
The civic body introduced the initiative to stop people from dumping large household items in public places. It also aims to improve waste collection across the city.
Focus on recycling and reducing landfill waste
GHMC said the programme will encourage responsible disposal of bulky waste. It will also reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and increase the recovery of reusable materials.
Officials said the initiative will help cut carbon emissions and support a circular economy by promoting recycling and reuse. GHMC urged residents to use the service and help keep Hyderabad clean and sustainable.
Drain cleaning reveals large-scale illegal dumping
The announcement comes just days after the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) cleared stormwater drains on June 28.
During the operation, HYDRAA removed truckloads of waste from the drains. The waste included cable wires, garbage bags, mattresses, pillows, blankets, sofas, chairs and other discarded household items.
Officials said the dumped waste blocked box drains that carry floodwater. The blockages reduced the drains’ capacity and increased the risk of waterlogging during heavy rain.
