GHMC council clears ₹11,460 crore budget for 2026–27

HYDERABAD: The council of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Saturday approved a ₹11,460-crore budget for the 2026–27 financial year, factoring in the merger of 27 surrounding municipalities.
Merged municipalities get ₹2,260 crore allocation
Of the total outlay, ₹9,200 crore has been earmarked for the existing GHMC area, while ₹2,260 crore has been allocated to the newly merged local bodies. The budget size marks an increase of ₹745.27 crore over the previous year’s ₹10,714.73 crore outlay.
The special council meeting was held at the GHMC headquarters, with mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi presiding. The meeting began at 11.25 IST, with the mayor delivering an emotional address as the council’s five-year term is set to end on February 10.
GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan presented the budget, stating that its preparation was more challenging this year due to the merger of 27 municipalities. He said the assets and liabilities of the merged bodies had been assessed before finalising allocations.
According to budget documents, revenue income for 2026–27 has been pegged at ₹6,441 crore, while revenue expenditure is estimated at ₹4,057 crore. The corporation expects major income from building permission fees, property tax, trade licence charges and other key sources. However, several corporators expressed dissatisfaction over what they said was a lower projection for property tax collections compared to previous years.
Mayor bids emotional farewell ahead of council term end
Mayor Vijayalakshmi said the outgoing council had prioritised infrastructure development and strengthening of sanitation systems over the past five years. She added that initiatives taken during the term included solid waste management reforms, road and junction development, digitisation of civic services and public health programmes.
Deputy mayor Mothe Srilatha Shobhan Reddy said her tenure had been personally fulfilling and thanked the public, commissioners, officials and staff for their cooperation. She urged officers to remain accessible to citizens and focus on resolving issues at the grassroots level.
The council also observed a condolence meeting over the death of Champapet division corporator Vanga Madhusudan Reddy, with the mayor moving a condolence resolution.
