Ghmc Commissioner R.v. Karnan Addressing Stakeholder Meeting On E Waste And Bio Medical Waste Management In Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, March 4, 2026: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R.V. Karnan has directed officials to ensure 100% collection of e-waste and bio-medical waste across the city. He warned that authorities must never mix bio-medical waste with municipal solid waste and said violations will invite strict action.

Karnan issued these directions during a stakeholder meeting at the GHMC head office. The meeting formed part of the 99-Day Action Plan aimed at strengthening scientific waste management across GHMC, Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) and CMC jurisdictions. E-waste recyclers, bio-medical waste treatment operators and corporate social responsibility (CSR) partners participated in the discussions.

No negligence in waste disposal

The commissioner made it clear that officials will not tolerate negligence in bio-medical waste collection or disposal. He said the corporation will issue notices and initiate stringent action against registered firms that fail to lift waste as per regulations.

Further, Karnan directed GHMC teams to coordinate with Assistant Medical Officers of Health (AMOHs). They must ensure that hospitals and healthcare establishments comply with bio-medical waste rules and user charge norms. He also urged stakeholders to cooperate in keeping the city clean and environmentally sustainable.

Special centres and weekend drives for e-waste

Meanwhile, MMC Commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy explained the e-waste collection framework. He announced that authorities will set up special collection centres in every circle so citizens can deposit e-waste voluntarily.

In addition, officials will conduct ward-level drives every Saturday and Sunday across 300 wards within the CURE limits. He encouraged participating organisations to adopt specific circles and wards and deploy representatives at collection points. Moreover, he advised companies to offer incentives such as coupons or direct payments to increase public participation.

GHMC Additional Commissioner (Sanitation) Ravi Kiran said the civic body will provide infrastructure for the drives, including ward offices and designated centres. However, participating firms will independently decide pricing, payments and incentives without municipal intervention.

During the meeting, several organisations agreed to make direct payments through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or cash for collected e-waste. Others committed to distributing redeemable coupons under CSR initiatives. Additionally, officials advised retailers to share information about households generating e-waste to enable coordinated doorstep collection.

Among those who attended the meeting were GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health) Priyanka Ala, Additional Commissioners (Sanitation) Ravi Kiran and Raghu Prasad, Telangana Pollution Control Board Superintending Engineer Srujana Sri, and representatives of e-waste recycling firms and bio-medical waste handling agencies.
