Ghatkesar–Raigiri MMTS Phase II railway alignment in Telangana

HYDERABAD: After years of delay, work on the Ghatkesar–Yadadri (Raigiri) MMTS Phase II extension is set to begin soon. The Railway Ministry aims to complete the project within two-and-a-half years.

Once operational, the line will allow direct travel from Secunderabad to Raigiri, with onward road connectivity to Yadagirigutta. At present, pilgrims and commuters must rely on buses or private vehicles to reach Yadadri.

Railways take up project without state funding

As part of the Yadadri development plan, the state government had proposed the MMTS extension in 2015, but the project did not take off. The Railways have now decided to execute the project independently, without the state government’s financial participation. Officials said preparatory work is under way to launch the MMTS second-phase extension shortly.

The tender process for the Ghatkesar–Yadadri railway project has been completed, with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) winning the contract. Land acquisition for the 35-km stretch between Ghatkesar and Raigiri has already been completed.

Cost revised to ₹425 crore; phased execution planned

The project was initially estimated at ₹330 crore in 2016–17. Revised estimates later pegged the cost at ₹412.2 crore, which is expected to rise to about ₹425 crore by the time construction begins.

The corridor will connect Secunderabad to Charlapalli, and further through Ghatkesar, Bibinagar, Pagidipalli and Bhuvanagiri before reaching Raigiri. From Raigiri, Yadagirigutta temple is about 4 km by road.

The project includes construction of 59 minor bridges and one major bridge. Officials said earthwork, bridge construction, signalling and telecommunications works, and electrical works have already commenced.

Execution will be in two phases: the first phase covers the Raigiri–Bhuvanagiri–Pagidipalli stretch of 17.09 km, while the second phase spans 16.07 km from Pagidipalli to Bibinagar and Ghatkesar.

Once completed, the MMTS network will offer direct connectivity to Raigiri from areas such as Patancheru, Tellapur, Lingampally, Umanagar and Medchal, significantly improving access to Yadagirigutta.
