Gender determination racket busted at Vanasthalipuram hospital; two arrested
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Police busted an alleged illegal sex determination racket operating from Hayagriva Hospital in Vanasthalipuram during a decoy operation and arrested the hospital director and a laboratory technician.
Police said the operation was carried out after receiving information about illegal prenatal sex determination activities at the hospital. Acting on the tip-off, officers deployed a decoy customer and gathered evidence before conducting the raid.
The accused have been identified as the hospital director and a lab technician. Investigators alleged that the hospital was conducting prenatal sex determination tests in violation of the law.
Investigation underway into wider network
Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994, commonly known as the PCPNDT Act. The legislation prohibits sex selection and prenatal sex determination except under specific medical circumstances.
Officials seized material connected to the alleged operation and are examining records to determine the scale of the activity and whether more people were involved.
Police said further investigation is under way to identify other suspects and ascertain how long the alleged racket had been operating.
