HYDERABAD: A traffic police inspector who spends his days enforcing road safety has drawn attention for his fitness discipline. Ganta Mallesham, posted at Uppal traffic police station, won a silver medal in bodybuilding at the ‘Telangana Fourth Police Sports and Games Meet-2016’ held under the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate.

Fitness focus beyond duty hours

Mallesham said he turned to structured exercise and diet control to overcome weight gain caused by work pressure and irregular habits. “If we give one hour a day to our body, the remaining 23 hours will support us,” he said.

Daughter’s question triggers transformation

Originally from Salkur village in Vemulapally mandal of Nalgonda district, Mallesham trained in the 2007 batch. He now serves as inspector at Uppal traffic police station.

He said he developed an interest in exercise, swimming, boxing and horse riding during Intermediate. After joining the police force, workload and lifestyle changes led to weight gain.

“I was not eating on time and was not sleeping properly. My weight increased to 80 kg. With a heavy belly, even standing or sitting for long became difficult,” he said.

Mallesham said his daughter’s remark pushed him to join a gym. “One day, my daughter hugged me and rubbed my stomach. She asked, ‘Daddy, why is your tummy like this? Will you reduce it for me?’ That day I joined a gym,” he said.

Under a trainer’s supervision, he followed a strict workout and diet plan. He lost 10 kg in three months and later reduced his weight from 86 kg to 60 kg as he took up bodybuilding seriously.

Malkajgiri Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty congratulated him and presented a certificate of appreciation.

Mallesham said several children of his friends have now taken up regular exercise, inspired by his example.
