Hyderabad’s Gandhi Medical College marks 71st foundation day

HYDERABAD: Gandhi Medical College completed 71 years on September 14. Established in 1954 as People’s Medical College with just 40 students, it has grown into one of India’s best medical institutions, producing thousands of doctors working across the country and abroad.
Initially, the Anwar-ul-Uloom Educational Society started the college. Then-President Rajendra Prasad inaugurated it in Humayunnagar on June 25, 1955. The college shifted to Basheerbagh in July 1958 and was renamed Gandhi Medical College. In 2003, the college moved to its present modern campus in Secunderabad. In the 1950s and 1960s, Gandhi Hospital was affiliated to the college. Today, both operate within the same campus in Secunderabad, providing comprehensive medical education and services.
Alumni support scholarships and equipment
The Gandhi Medical College Alumni Association annually awards gold medals and prizes to outstanding students and provides scholarships to underprivileged students. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the association supported the college with critical medical equipment and relief efforts.
71st Foundation Day celebration today
The alumni association president, Dr. G.R. Lingamurthy, and secretary, Venkat Ratnam, announced that the college will celebrate its 71st Foundation Day on September 14 at the Alumni Hall on the campus. They said that former NIMS director Raja Reddy, Director of Medical Education Narender Kumar, college principal K. Indira, superintendent N. Vani, and Telangana State Medical Council chairman Dr. K. Mahesh Kumar will attend as chief guests. They will present gold medals to meritorious undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty students.
