Doctors at Gandhi Hospital Hyderabad announce first IVF birth

HYDERABAD: Gandhi Hospital has recorded its first delivery through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), marking a milestone in the history of the state-run facility.

Doctors at the hospital disclosed the details to the media on Wednesday.

Srikanth and Shruti from Shamshabad, who married eight years ago, had been seeking treatment for infertility. The couple spent several lakh rupees at corporate hospital fertility centres in Hyderabad but did not conceive.

Since 2024, they have been undergoing treatment at the fertility centre in Gandhi Hospital. After completing the required IVF procedures, Shruti delivered a healthy baby on February 7.

Public trust grows in government fertility services

Dr Narender Kumar, Director of Medical Education, said public confidence in the fertility centre at Gandhi Hospital had increased. He said five more couples are ready for IVF procedures.

He added that the state government plans to establish fertility centres in four government hospitals. A super-speciality hospital in Warangal is ready for inauguration.

Corporate-level care at Gandhi, say doctors

Prof Shobha, head of the gynaecology department and in-charge superintendent at Gandhi Hospital, said the mother and child hospital is providing treatment on par with corporate hospitals. She said doctors at the facility are working efficiently.

Dr Sumitra, nodal officer of the fertility centre, said childless couples are increasingly turning to government hospitals. She said Gandhi Hospital is delivering results not seen elsewhere in the state.

She added that 27,372 people visited the fertility centre for tests during 2024-25.
