Gachibowli hockey stadium renovation nears completion ahead of Women’s World Cup qualifiers

HYDERABAD: The Gachibowli Hockey Stadium is set to regain its former prominence as renovation works worth ₹20 crore near completion ahead of the Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifiers.
Authorities are upgrading the stadium to meet international standards for the tournament scheduled to begin on March 8. The winner of the qualifiers will secure a direct berth in the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup.
Major upgrade after years of neglect
The stadium was built nearly 25 years ago during the Telugu Desam Party government. Over the years, the venue deteriorated due to limited maintenance and lack of repairs.
The current renovation aims to restore the facility with several modern upgrades.
A new blue astro turf imported from New Zealand has been installed on the field. Seating capacity has also been expanded significantly, with around 2,000 additional seats added to the existing 200.
Modern facilities and floodlights installed
Officials have also set up four dedicated rooms with lockers for players and improved other support facilities across the stadium.
To enable night matches, 150 modern floodlights have been installed.
Teams from India, Scotland and Uruguay have already reached the venue and begun training ahead of the tournament.
