Fuel panic grips Hyderabad, dealers deny shortage

HYDERABAD: Panic buying triggered by misleading reports of a fuel shortage has led to an abnormal surge in sales across the country, fuel dealers said on March 25, 2026.
The Telangana Petroleum Dealers Association said sales at retail outlets rose nearly 2.5 to three times the normal levels. This led to temporary stock exhaustion at several outlets.
The association clarified that there is no shortage of fuel. It said adequate stocks are available with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and supply chains are functioning normally.
Safety warning against storing fuel in containers
The association warned that storing petrol or diesel in cans violates Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) norms and poses serious safety risks.
“Improper storage of fuel can lead to hazardous situations, including fire accidents. This is not a safe or approved method of storing fuel,” the statement said.
No shortage of fuel or LPG cylinders in #Hyderabad. Citizens are requested not to panic or indulge in unnecessary rush that may create disruption. The situation is being closely monitored. Please remain calm and cooperate. https://t.co/WkCO4L2JbO pic.twitter.com/Wp1K6X5DmQ

Call for responsible consumer behaviour across the country
The association urged citizens to avoid panic buying and purchase fuel only as per regular needs. It also asked people not to store fuel in unauthorised containers and to refrain from spreading false information.
“Do not believe or spread fake news. Stay informed and act responsibly,” said Marri Amarender Reddy, president of the Telangana Petroleum Dealers Association.
The association said coordinated action by consumers is necessary to prevent inconvenience and ensure public safety.
