Fraud alert: How one phone call cost Hyderabadi Rs. 7.2 lakhs
Hyderabad: A 45-year-old private employee from Hyderabad has fallen victim to a cyber fraud scheme and lost Rs. 7,27,400. According to cybercrime police, the victim received a call from a scammer claiming to be affiliated with Cognizant, which initiated a series of events leading to the financial loss.
The scam began with a phone call from the number 9059863987. The caller quickly established a rapport with the victim, transitioning the conversation to WhatsApp, where she continued to build trust. Eventually, the scammer introduced the victim to a trading platform, promising lucrative returns.
After investing money, the victim was shown apparent profits in USD. However, when he attempted to withdraw his earnings, the scammer requested payment for taxes and an exchange fee. Despite complying with these demands, the victim was subsequently asked for additional payments, ultimately realising he had been deceived.
The victim filed an online complaint with the cybercrime police.
Public Advisory:
Fraudsters are targeting victims through various online social media platforms such as Telegram, WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook by promoting fake investment apps and websites.
These schemes are fraudulent and do not have SEBI’s endorsement. Always consult a SEBI-registered financial advisor before making any investments.
Fraudsters use simple tactics to lure unsuspecting investors with promises of high returns and fake profit screenshots. Initially, they may credit a small amount to the victim’s account to build trust. Remember, promises of huge returns are often too good to be true.
