Five Shadnagar cops suspended after Dalit woman alleges custodial torture

Hyderabad: Five police officers from Shadnagar Police Station were suspended on August 5, 2024 (Monday) after accusations of torturing a Dalit woman, Sunitha, while she was in police custody.
The Cyberabad Police Commissioner, Avinash Mohanty, has announced the suspension of the Detective Inspector and five constables from the Shadnagar Police Station in relation to the allegations. The police department will take additional disciplinary steps.
The alleged abuse occurred on July 28 when Sunitha, a 35-year-old from Ambedkar Colony, was brought in for interrogation regarding a property offense. The case was based on a complaint filed by Ubbani Nagender on July 24 about stolen cash and gold valued at ₹4.25 lakh.
Sunitha reported that she was severely tortured during her detention. “Police officers tied my hands and legs with ropes, then beat me with leather belts and pressured me into confessing to a crime I didn’t commit,” she claimed. She was released after that incident.
In response to the allegations, Detective Inspector Ramireddy of Shadnagar was suspended, and an inquiry was initiated by Shadnagar ACP NCH Rangaswamy.
Shamshabad DCP B. Rajesh has confirmed that a medico-legal case (MLC) has been filed and an investigation is being conducted to determine the truth and ensure accountability.
