Nampally/ Gachibowli:Cyberabad police who were investigating the abetment to suicide case of Rohith Vemula of University of Hyderabad submitted a closure report in Telangana High court on Friday. The report mentioned lack of evidence and asked to proceed accordingly.
On Jan 17, 2016 Rohith Vemula was found dead hanging from a fan in a room at NRS hostel of University of Hyderabad. Dontha Prasanth who was a PHD student then filed a complaint with Gachibowli police alleging that the cause of death of Vemula Rohith was due to harassment and the atrocities of Prof. Podile Apparao former vice-chancellor of University of Hyderabad, Bandaru Dattatreya, (former Member of Parliament, Secunderabad), former BJP MLC, N. Ramchandra Rao, ABVP leaders Krishna Chaitanya, Nandanam Susheel Kumar and Nandanam Diwakar. Gachibowli police registered a case under section 306 (abetment to suicide) and SC/ ST atrocity Act and further investigation.
Quoting the lines from the Rohith Vemula suicide letter- “I have no complaints on anyone. It was always with myself I had problems. I feel a growing gap between my soul and my body”, “I am not hurt at this moment. I am not sad. I am just empty. Unconcerned about myself. That’s pathetic. And that’s why I am doing this”, police suspected “The deceased also seemed to be under severe depression and disappointment” In his words.
Likewise using the lines of “No one is responsible for my this act of killing myself. No one instigated me either by their acts or by their words to this act. This is my decision and I am the only one responsible for this. Do not trouble my friends and enemies on this after I am gone”, the police came to the conclusion that no one is responsible for his death. Using the above lines police said in the final report “In his own words, he spoke about the role of others. These words are crucial to know whether anyone abetted his suicide”.
List of reasons driven Rohit Vemula to suicide
Further in the final report the police gave a list of reasons that might have led to Rohit Vemula’s drastic decision- “Separation of his parents, younger brother being employed and engaged, discontinuation of one Phd and joining another. Rohit Vemula was in the constant fear that as he does not belong to Scheduled Caste his caste identity will be exposed and would put him to loss of his academic degrees that he earned over the years and be compelled to face prosecution. Thus, the deceased had multiple issues worrying him which could have driven him to commit suicide. Despite best efforts, no evidence could be found to establish that the actions of the accused have driven the deceased to commit suicide”.
Assistant commissioner police Madhapur division Ch Sreekanth, referring to the case as lack of evidence, submitted his final report. The report stated, “After serving the notice to the complainant through a registered post and submitting the final report to the Court with a prayer to issue proceedings accordingly”.
