HYDERABAD: The Cyber Crime Wing of Hyderabad City Police has issued a public alert warning citizens about fake Facebook and Instagram accounts impersonating V C Sajjanar, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad City.

Police said cyber fraudsters have created fake profiles in the name of the commissioner and are sending messages to the public claiming, “I am in trouble, please send money”, or making similar urgent requests for financial assistance. These messages are fraudulent and aimed at cheating unsuspecting citizens.

The police clarified that the commissioner of police or any senior police officer will never seek money, financial help or personal details through social media messages. Citizens have been advised not to respond to requests for money, urgent transfers or help sent from suspicious accounts.

Advisory to citizens on avoiding impersonation scams

Hyderabad City Police urged the public not to accept friend requests from duplicate or suspicious profiles and to avoid sharing one-time passwords, bank details or personal information. Officials said public representatives and celebrities do not ask for money on social media platforms.

Citizens have been asked to verify any doubtful message by directly contacting the concerned person through known official channels and to look for verified accounts with a blue tick and official handles.

How to report fake profiles and cyber fraud

Police advised users to immediately block such fake accounts and report them to Facebook or Instagram. Victims or those who come across such frauds can report cybercrime by calling the national helpline 1930 or by visiting the cybercrime reporting portal.
