HYDERABAD: A four-member gang that allegedly posed as police personnel, kidnapped businessmen and extorted money was arrested by the Jagadgirigutta police and the Cyberabad Central Crime Station (CCS) team. Two of their associates are absconding, police said.

According to police, the accused impersonated police officers using fake identity cards, uniforms and rank badges to target businessmen and affluent individuals. The gang allegedly extorted ₹6.26 lakh from a businessman after abducting him on the pretext of a criminal case.

The case came to light after Kavuri Purnachandra Rao, 42, a resident of Jayanagar in Kukatpally, lodged a complaint. He alleged that on May 18, he was intercepted near Subhodaya Colony while travelling towards Prashanth Nagar by six persons claiming to be police officers.

Victim forced to withdraw and transfer money

After taking the money, the accused allegedly snatched his mobile phone and abandoned him in Kukatpally.

Speaking on the case, N. Koti Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Quthbullapur Zone, said the gang systematically targeted businessmen by posing as police personnel and using forged official documents and uniforms.
