HYDERABAD:

Cyber fraudsters have created multiple fake Facebook accounts impersonating V C Sajjanar, and have been sending messages to his friends claiming he is in trouble and needs money. One of his friends was deceived and transferred ₹20,000 to an account shared by the fraudster.

Sajjanar said his only official Facebook page is the link he shared, adding that all other accounts in his name are fake. He said the Hyderabad Cyber Crime police station’s Cyber Crime Team, with support from Meta Platforms, is working to identify and remove the fraudulent profiles.

He urged people not to respond to friend requests or messages seeking money from anyone claiming to be him or any public official. “Always verify by directly calling the person before acting on such messages,” he said.

Sajjanar advised users to block and report suspicious messages, links or video calls immediately.

Citizens have been asked to report cyber frauds to the 1930 National Cybercrime Helpline or through cybercrime.gov.in.

He said alertness is essential to avoid financial loss. “Only alertness can protect us and our money from cyber criminals,” he added.
