Residents protest against proposed graveyard land allocation in Erragadda, Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Hundreds of residents from gated communities in Erragadda staged a protest on Saturday opposing the Telangana government’s proposal to allocate land for a Muslim graveyard in the area.

Residents from Kalpataru, Brigade Citadel, Brigade Vasavi Brundavanam and Janapriya apartments said they were not against establishing a graveyard but objected to its location in the middle of a densely populated residential zone.

Residents cite dense habitation, lack of consultation

The issue came to the fore during the recent Jubilee Hills bypoll, when the land was allotted through the Waqf Board. Following initial protests, residents approached the Telangana High Court, which ordered status quo.

Residents alleged that despite the matter being sub judice, authorities entered the site through another gate and began ground preparation on December 31, 2025. “We gathered immediately and stopped the levelling work. The proposed graveyard will inconvenience nearly 5,000 flats and residents. We strongly oppose it and want the government to revoke its decision,” said Ch. Hanumanthu Naidu of Brigade Citadel.

‘Illegal and unjust’, protests to continue

Residents said the government went ahead without consulting them despite their significant investment in housing. “We are not against any community but do not want a graveyard in the middle of a residential area,” said Madhusudan, another resident.

Brigade Citadel association former president Venkateshwarulu termed the proposal “illegal and unjust” and said protests would continue until the government withdrew its decision.

Syed, another resident, said: “We are not against the graveyard itself but want it located at a suitable place. The matter is already before the court, yet people are still entering the land from the back side and creating disturbances.”
