Election officials warn public against OTP fraud during SIR-2026 verification
Hyderabad : Election authorities have urged citizens to remain alert against cyber fraud during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026 exercise, warning that scammers may attempt to misuse the voter verification process to steal personal and financial information.
Officials said no election official will ever ask voters to share one-time passwords (OTPs), banking credentials or other confidential information over phone calls or digital platforms. Citizens have been advised not to disclose such details under any circumstances.
Report suspicious calls immediately
Authorities said anyone receiving suspicious calls claiming to be linked to the voter verification process should disconnect the call immediately and report the incident to the national cybercrime helpline, 1930.
They also appealed to the public to spread awareness among family members, friends and neighbours, particularly senior citizens and first-time voters, who may be more vulnerable to such fraud attempts.
Protect identity and financial information
The advisory emphasised that a single OTP shared with fraudsters could compromise personal identity, banking accounts and sensitive data. Officials urged voters to remain vigilant and verify any communication related to the electoral process only through authorised channels.
The awareness campaign reinforces that every vote is valuable, and safeguarding personal information is equally important during the SIR-2026 voter verification process.
