Hyderabad: Dundigal police have solved the murder of an 85-year-old woman within 24 hours, arresting a 36-year-old woman who allegedly killed the victim and robbed her jewellery, police said on February 3, 2026.

The case was registered as Crime No. 108/2026 under Sections 103 and 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Dundigal police station. The accused, P. Kavitha, a labourer from Church Gagillapur in Dundigal, was arrested at 21.30 IST on February 3 and was being produced before a court.

Trust gained before fatal attack

Police said the deceased, Chinnabattini Susheelamma, 85, lived alone at Church Gagillapur. Kavitha had worked at her house for about 15 days earlier and gained her trust by supplying toddy.

On February 2, 2026, around 14.30 IST, when Susheelamma was alone at home, the accused allegedly attacked her on the head with a stone, causing her death. She later fled with gold earrings and a finger ring, which were sold at a local jewellery shop, police said.

CCTV evidence proves crucial

The case was cracked using CCTV footage from the crime scene and the jewellery shop where the stolen ornaments were sold. Police said cameras installed by a local resident, Srikar Reddy of Church Gagillapur, played a key role in tracing the accused. He will be honoured at the press meet, officials said.

A pair of gold earrings, a ring and a mobile phone were seized from the accused.

The detection involved teams from Dundigal police, the Central Crime Station and the Special Operations Team, police said. The operation was led by P. Sateesh, station house officer, Dundigal, along with senior and field officers from CCS and Quthubullapur SOT.

In a public appeal, police urged residents and commercial establishments to install CCTV cameras to help prevent and detect crimes.

The details were shared by Ch. Shankar Reddy.
