El Nino raises drought fears in Telangana

HYDERABAD: A prolonged dry spell triggered by El Nino is raising concerns of drought in Telangana, with the state recording a 33% rainfall deficit during the crucial June-July sowing period. Weather experts warn that the seasonal shortfall could reach 40% if the current trend continues, posing a serious threat to agriculture and water availability. Recent forecasts also indicate below-normal rainfall across Telangana during the remainder of July.
Reservoirs across the state have little water available for irrigation, with existing storage expected to be prioritised for drinking water. Tanks and ponds are drying up, while groundwater levels continue to decline, raising concerns over water security if rainfall does not improve.
Meteorologists say the impact of the current El Nino appears more severe than previous episodes. Even farmers cultivating crops with borewell or open-well irrigation may face difficulties in sustaining their fields if rainfall remains below normal.
Alternative crops recommended
Agriculture experts have advised farmers against taking risks with water-intensive paddy cultivation. They recommend shifting to pulses, millets and oilseed crops, which require less water and are better suited to prevailing conditions.
The state government has begun the first phase of its contingency crop plan, recommending alternative crops based on agro-climatic zones and district-specific conditions. It has also stressed the importance of intercropping to reduce risks.
Cotton sowing warning
Officials have advised farmers not to sow cotton after July 20, warning that delayed sowing could result in lower yields if rainfall continues to remain deficient.
