EC prepares Telangana voter list overhaul ahead of SIR 2026

HYDERABAD: The Election Commission of India has begun preparatory work for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Telangana, likely to be taken up in March as part of SIR 2026, according to official sources.
As part of advance preparations, the Commission has initiated a mapping exercise linking the electoral rolls published during SIR 2002 with the Special Summary Revision (SSR) 2025 voter list. The exercise aims to identify voters currently on the rolls whose names also appeared in the 2002 SIR list.
The responsibility for this mapping has been assigned to booth-level officers (BLOs), who have been directed to complete the task within the next two to three days. BLOs have been trained to carry out the process using the BLO mobile application, which includes a specific option to “map elector with previous SIR”.
Officials said voters will also be able to contact their respective BLOs by phone during the process, if required.
The Election Commission has already released draft electoral rolls in six states where the second phase of SIR has been completed, and has announced that the final rolls for those states will be published in February.
While electoral rolls are usually updated annually under the Special Summary Revision, the last Special Intensive Revision in the undivided Andhra Pradesh was conducted in 2002. The proposed SIR in Telangana will be the first such exercise in more than two decades.
