Durganagar Colony in Ameenpur wary of stray dog menace
HYDERABAD: Residents of Durganagar Colony in the Ameenpur division have faced the threat of free-roaming dog attacks for the past six to seven months. Multiple dog bite incidents have been reported, including one involving two children in the colony. Despite repeated complaints through official channels, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation(CMC) has not taken effective action.
Speaking to HyderabadMail Pavan Yennampelli, a resident of the colony, about the situation after raising a complaint on the GHMC’s MyCure app and receiving no satisfactory response. He added that the most serious case involved two children attacked by stray dogs near a school. Municipal officials visited the spot that day, but they did not register a formal complaint or take any follow-up action. Pavan said, “Cyberabad Municipal Corporation also knows because they also came there that day. But nothing was done.”
Additionally, residents say there have been at least two or three dog bite cases in the past year. Each time, they raised the issue in the locality’s WhatsApp group, which includes CMC officials. The only response was a promise to take action. “We informed them in the group but got no response,” said Pavan.
Residents first raised the free-roaming dog issue six to seven months ago. Initially, CMC teams arrived to carry out Animal Birth Control (ABC) procedures, but only vaccinated or sterilized two or three dogs at a time. As a result, the larger dog population remained unmanaged. “They say they are sending ABC teams, but they only treat two or three dogs, not all of them,” said Pavan.
Residents seek comprehensive sterilisation drive
Meanwhile, the free-roaming dog population keeps growing. Residents say the dogs are becoming more territorial and aggressive, and the risk of additional dog bite incidents rises.
Pavan has filed a complaint on the MyCure app and has raised the issue repeatedly through the local CMC WhatsApp group, which includes municipal officials. Nevertheless, the complaints have been acknowledged but not acted upon.
“For six to seven months, we have reported this. Officials say they will act, but nothing has happened,” he said. He urges CMC’s Ameenpur division to conduct a full stray dog census in Durganagar Colony, Kistareddypet. He wants a complete ABC vaccination and sterilization drive, not just the limited steps taken so far. He also calls for a way for residents to report dangerous dogs and get a timely response. Pavan said, “Small children cannot step out safely. Even elders find it difficult. This has been going on too long”.
