Durgam Cheruvu gets permanent sewage control plan

Durgam Cheruvu

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) have decided to implement a permanent solution to prevent sewage from entering Durgam Cheruvu.

As part of the exercise, HMWSSB Joint Managing Director Mayank Mittal, Kukatpally Zonal Commissioner Mayank Singh and HMWSSB Executive Director, Cyberabad, M Santosh, among other senior officials, inspected the lake jointly on September 4.

Officials examined all routes through which water enters the lake. They identified four major inflow points — the Madhapur inlet and inspection and desilting (I&D) nala, Silent Valley I&D nala, Vitthal Rao Nagar box nala and the route from the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) layout.

The officials also examined sewage flows at the respective inlets and discussed measures to prevent sewage from entering the lake.

Rising sewage generation puts pressure on existing STP

Officials noted that the sewage treatment plant (STP) at Durgam Cheruvu is operating at full capacity. However, the rapid growth in residential areas and population around the lake has led to a significant increase in sewage generation.

They also examined the situation during the monsoon, when additional sewage reaches the lake along with rainwater.

Against this backdrop, officials decided to conduct a detailed study of the topography and hydrology of areas around Durgam Cheruvu and prepare a permanent plan of action to prevent sewage from entering the lake.

They will coordinate to undertake sewage diversion, treatment and other technical measures required at the four identified major inlets.

Officials told to coordinate and speed up measures

The objective is to protect Durgam Cheruvu’s natural surroundings, ecological balance and recreational environment by completely preventing sewage inflows, officials said.

Mayank Mittal directed the officials to implement a permanent solution and asked the concerned departments to coordinate and speed up the required measures.

S Padmaja, Chief General Manager, STP Division; Narayan, Director, Operations and Maintenance; Harishankar, General Manager, Operations and Maintenance; the Madhapur deputy commissioner; concerned deputy general managers and managers; and officials and staff from the STP and Operations and Maintenance departments participated in the inspection.
