Durgam Cheruvu to remain closed on September 11 for maintenance

HYDERABAD: Durgam Cheruvu will remain closed to visitors on September 11 as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) takes up maintenance works to improve facilities at the lake premises.
The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) said in a public advisory that entry would remain closed on September 10 and 11. It asked visitors to plan their visits accordingly and avoid the premises during the closure.
Joint inspection identified four major sewage inlets
The closure comes days after fishermen reported losing tonnes of fish, allegedly due to sewage leakage into the lake.
Following the reports, HMWSSB and CMC conducted a joint inspection of the lake and identified four major sewage inflow points — Madhapur Interception and Diversion (I&D) nala, Silent Valley I&D nala, Vittal Rao Nagar box nala and a route from the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) layout.
Officials also found that the sewage treatment plant at Durgam Cheruvu was operating at full capacity, while sewage generation in surrounding residential areas had increased. During the monsoon, additional sewage can enter the lake along with rainwater, officials said.
HMWSSB and CMC have planned remedial measures and a detailed study of the lake’s catchment, topography and hydrology to work out a permanent solution to prevent sewage inflow.
