Drunk man ignites lighter

Hyderabad: A man who had come to buy petrol ignited a lighter while fuel was being dispensed endangering himself and bystanders, including a woman and her child at a petrol pump in Nacharam.

The CCTV footage shows how the fire quickly engulfed the bike while panicked customers and staff ran for cover. A staff member promptly uses the fire extinguisher kept at the fuel station and douses the fire.

Following a complaint, Nacharam police have arrested two men, identified as Chiran and Arun, both originally from Bihar, in connection with the incident. According to the police report, the incident took place around sunset on Saturday. A visibly drunk Chiran arrived at the petrol station with a lighter in hand. Arun, an employee at the pump, noticed Chiran’s lighter and asked if he was planning to light it up. Challenging him further, Arun dared him to “do it if he had the guts.” Reacting to the provocation, Chiran lit the lighter while fuel was being dispensed, resulting in a sudden burst of flames.

The petrol pump’s surveillance cameras captured a terrifying moment: a woman and her child, nearby at the time, recoiled in shock as flames erupted. In an impulsive move, Chiran, unfazed by the fire, kicked the flames with his foot as though it were a soccer ball. The flames approached the woman and her child, but they narrowly escaped harm.

Inspector G. Rudvir Kumar of Nacharam Police stated that both men were under the influence of alcohol at the time, with Chiran confirmed to be intoxicated. The police promptly arrested the duo and charged them with mischief by fire and explosives. They will be presented in court.

“This dangerous act not only put lives at risk but could have caused a catastrophic explosion, especially in this crowded area with heavy traffic,” said Inspector Kumar.
