HYDERABAD: A car driven by an inebriated man hit two pedestrians at different locations in Miyapur on Friday morning, leaving both victims critically injured, police said.

According to Miyapur police, the incident occurred around 9.30 am when the driver, Boda Venkanna, was travelling from KPHB towards Miyapur via Gokul Plots. The car first hit an unidentified man from behind near Gokul crossroads while he was walking along the road.

The victim suffered severe bleeding injuries and was shifted by local residents to a private hospital for treatment.

About half a kilometre ahead, the same vehicle struck Madhava Rao, who was crossing the road in front of his kirana shop. He was taken to a private hospital in Miyapur, where doctors said his condition was critical.

Locals stop vehicle, alert police

Local residents chased the car after the second accident, stopped it, and alerted the police. The driver was taken into custody and subjected to a breathalyser test, which showed 170 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, far exceeding the permissible limit of 30 micrograms.

Police booked Venkanna on charges of rash and negligent driving. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the car reportedly belongs to his wife, Padma, an employee of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Officials said records were being verified to confirm her designation.

Police added that the accused holds a valid driving licence and that there were no pending challans against the vehicle. Further investigation is underway.
