‘DOBARA ALMARI’ powers Hyderabad’s sustainable thrift revival, giving seniors purpose

Hyderabad: The simple act of passing on an old sweater or a set of dishes is sparking a movement rooted in dignity, sustainability, and human connection through the ‘DOBARA ALMARI’ initiative. It is not just a thrift store. It is a lively centre where seniors rediscover purpose as they guide its daily life, where once-loved items begin new journeys, and where people of all ages come together as collaborators, shaping a city that values mindfulness and togetherness.
DOBARA ALMARI stands apart from typical charity drives or thrift shops. Here, senior citizens are the visionaries and caretakers, shaping a circular economy and discovering their own ikigai, or sense of purpose. The initiative invites families to donate gently used treasures, clothing, books, and household goods. Each item is carefully selected and given a new chapter through lively thrift markets and community events.
Mateen Ansari, Co-founder and Director of DOBARA, the parent group focused on senior well-being, explained, “At its core, DOBARA ALMARI is about breathing new life into resources, nurturing a spirit of participation, and ensuring that everyone receives essentials with dignity and choice, not as charity.”
Further, Mateen Ansari added, “DOBARA ALMARI was born from two pressing gaps, rising material waste in our homes and unequal access to basic necessities.”
This model is driven by the community. People donate gently used clothes, books, and household items. Seniors sort, price, and display these at pop-up events or at the Sheikpet headquarters. Each exchange starts a conversation, helping people from different generations connect and challenge old stereotypes.
“Emotionally, it restores dignity by shifting the narrative from charity to choice and participation. For seniors associated with DOBARA, the initiative offers an opportunity to stay engaged, contribute actively, and feel valued within the community,” Ansari explains.
Empowering seniors
The impact is threefold by empowering seniors with a renewed sense of purpose, promoting sustainable and responsible living, and fostering meaningful connections between seniors and young customers. The store becomes a natural meeting ground, where older volunteers and younger shoppers share stories, learn from one another, and build a culture of mutual respect.
This initiative supports DOBARA’s larger mission to care for the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of seniors. As DOBARA ALMARI prepares for its next sale on Dec 13, 2025, its vision continues to expand.
For the larger ecosystem, DOBARA ALMARI serves as a model of mindful consumption, showing how small, collective actions can create lasting social impact. Through DOBARA ALMARI, resources are not just redistributed. They are given a second life, bringing comfort, confidence, and connection to those who need it most while reinforcing the values of sustainability and empathy.
