Director Ram Gopal Varma's post sparks attention after questioning by Ongole police

Hyderabad: Controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, widely known as RGV, took to social media following his questioning by the Andhra Pradesh police on February 7, 2025.

In a post, Ram Gopal Varma wrote, β€œI LOVE ONGOLE 😍 AND I LOVE ONGOLE POLICE EVEN MORE😍😍. 3 CHEERS 🍺🍺🍺,” accompanied by a picture of himself holding a glass.

Varma’s appearance at the Ongole Rural Police Station was in connection with a defamation case filed over alleged offensive social media posts. The questioning lasted for nine hours, with Varma being grilled by Circle Inspector Srikant Babu. Authorities later issued fresh notices in relation to a separate case, though no further details were revealed.

The case dates back to November 2024 when Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Ramalingam filed a complaint against Varma. The complaint accused the director of posting morphed images of political figures, including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Minister Nara Lokesh.

It also referred to comments Varma made during promotional activities for his film Vyuham, which were seen as derogatory toward the political leaders.

Varma had previously been summoned to appear before the Ongole Rural Police on November 20, 2024, but requested an extension due to his film commitments. The police issued a second notice on November 25, and despite speculation about a possible arrest, Varma approached the High Court for relief. The court granted him relief but instructed him to cooperate with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Sections 336(4) and 353(2) of the BNS Act and Section 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act, which pertains to the dissemination of objectionable content online.

In addition to the ongoing investigation, Ram Gopal Varma is set to appear before the CID office in Guntur on February 10, 2025, for further questioning in a related matter.
