Director Ram Gopal Varma sentenced to three months jail in cheque bounce case

Hyderabad: Director Ram Gopal Varma, also known as RGV, has been sentenced to three months in jail in a cheque bounce case. The Andheri Magistrate’s Court in Mumbai issued the sentence on Tuesday, following RGV’s absence from court. Subsequently, a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued for him.

RGV was found guilty under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which addresses cheque dishonor due to insufficient funds or exceeding the arranged payment amount. The court has also ordered Ram Gopal Varma to pay the complainant Rs 3.72 lakh in compensation within the next three months, failing which he will face a three-month jail term.

The case dates back to 2018 when a company named Shree, through Maheshchandra Mishra, filed a complaint against Ram Gopal Varma’s firm over a bounced cheque.

According to the reports, RGVโ€™s financial troubles worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing him to sell his office. In June 2022, he was granted bail after executing a personal recognizance bond and paying a cash security of Rs 5,000. The court’s verdict on Tuesday further stated that RGV would not be eligible for a sentence reduction under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as he had not spent any time in custody during the trial.

RGV recently announced his upcoming Syndicate project, which he described as his most ambitious film yet. The movie will focus on the evolution of criminal organizations in India, starting from street gangs in the 1970s to the rise of corporate criminals like D-Company. Set in the near future, Syndicate will explore a new form of criminal syndicate involving politicians, law enforcement, businessmen, and the military, set against a backdrop of India’s current political climate.

Ram Gopal Varma has highlighted that Syndicate will not rely on supernatural elements but will instead highlight the real horrors of human actions, exploring the cyclical nature of crime and terror. He also expressed his desire to “wash away” his recent cinematic shortcomings with this film. The director further revealed that he would soon share details about the cast and other aspects of the project.

Reflecting on his past, RGV recently revisited his iconic film Satya and admitted that he had failed to appreciate its significance at its creation fully. He acknowledged that his later success and arrogance diverted his focus from the sincerity that defined Satya. In a public post, Ram Gopal Varma committed to approaching his future projects with the same sincerity that characterized his earlier work.
