Dense fog hits Hyderabad flights as north India reels

Fog disrupts flight operations at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

HYDERABAD: Dense fog across Delhi and parts of north India disrupted air traffic on Monday, triggering cancellations and delays at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA).

Hyderabad airport authorities said eight flights were cancelled, including four departures and four arrivals. The affected routes included services between Hyderabad and Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Delhi, as well as inbound flights from these cities.

Nineteen flights were delayed due to knock-on effects from poor visibility in the north. The delayed services were to or from Delhi, Ranchi, Varanasi, Agartala, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kochi.

RGIA issued a passenger advisory on X at 5.33 pm, cautioning that some flights could be impacted due to heavy fog over northern India.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Civil Aviation issued an impact alert for north India, warning of significant visibility issues at Delhi and other airports in the region.

IndiGo said in a statement: “Low visibility (below minima) due to dense fog has severely impacted operations at Delhi and other airports across north India, which is unfortunately beyond our control. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Delhi airport in line with established safety protocols.”
