Shaikpet residents demand urgent road safety measures after fatal accident

Hyderabad: Residents of Shaikpet are calling for urgent road safety measures on the Shaikpet-Manikonda Road after a fatal accident on January 28, 2025, in which a 10-year-old girl was killed. The young girl fell from her father’s Activa scooter and was run over by a lorry while heading to Delhi School of Excellence in Manikonda around 8:30 a.m.
Local residents are raising concerns about the road’s design, which they say lacks proper safety features. According to the residents, the Shaikpet-Manikonda road, a radial road constructed by HMDA a few years ago, has no road dividers, speed breakers, rumble strips, or caution boards at intersections, making it prone to accidents.
Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Ajay Kumar Maryala, a social activist and Shaikpet resident, highlighted the rapid development in nearby areas such as Manikonda, Puppalguda, and Narsingi over the past few years. He noted that the increase in traffic has worsened the situation. “This road has become increasingly dangerous due to vehicles overlapping and two-wheeler commuters having to make sudden stops, leading to accidents,” he said.
Ajay Maryala has requested the Zonal Commissioner for Khairtabad, Anuraag Jayanthi, and other relevant authorities to inspect the road and implement safety measures. He also urged GHMC and Manikonda Municipality officials to address the situation.
Ajay Maryala pointed out several areas where the road needs improvement. In Shaikpet, he called for the removal of construction debris, which narrows the road, particularly at the Shaikpet entrance after Ramalayam and near the Shaikpet Ward office. He also suggested widening the road at the Tagespo Junction and Andhra Bank Junction in Manikonda, where obstructions need to be cleared.
He further raised concerns about ongoing issues that have been brought to the attention of GHMC officials, including the accumulation of garbage near the GHMC Ward office and a narrowing road due to waste plants and tree branches protruding into the road.
Ajay Maryala also pointed to illegal encroachments by commercial establishments along the road, such as fast food centers and shops, which block the road and create bottlenecks. He called on the GHMC’s town planning wing to remove these encroachments.
Another critical issue is the stagnating water on the road caused by a leaking drinking water line near the ex-corporator’s house. According to Ajay, the HMWSSB has failed to address the issue, which has led to water pooling on the road, creating a hazard for two-wheeler commuters.
Social Activist Ajay Maryala highlighted that addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring the safety of commuters on the Shaikpet-Manikonda Road and preventing further accidents.
