Miyapur: A significant sinkhole that emerged in Deepthisri Nagar, Miyapur, Hyderabad, around 3 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024, has worsened into a large waterlogged depression filled with drainage water. The situation has led to severe traffic congestion and disruptions, especially impacting Ganesh immersion vehicles trying to navigate the area. What began as a small sinkhole has grown into a large and deep gap due to the ongoing repair works.

Repair efforts started on Saturday, September 14, 2024, but were halted due to persistent drainage problems. The situation has deteriorated as the land has further divided and filled with drainage water, prompting the Traffic Police of Cyberabad to place numerous barricades around the sinkhole to prevent accidents and protect lives. As a result, large vehicles are being rerouted to prevent additional damage.

While speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Rami Reddy from Shanti Nagar Colony expressed frustration, stating, “Repair attempts over the past two days have been unsuccessful. The drainage system has been overflowing, and efforts to redirect the water have not alleviated the problem. Main road access has been restricted for over 500 families, and school buses and other heavy vehicles cannot enter Shanti Nagar Colony.”

Rami Reddy added, “The repair attempts were inadequate from the start. The drainage issues have become a significant obstacle, highlighting flaws in Hyderabad’s drainage system. The situation has been worsened by the Ganesh immersion festival, causing severe traffic jams and congestion.”

Initially, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) acted quickly to address a large pothole on the main road, halting traffic and diverting vehicles to alternative routes to prevent accidents. Preliminary investigations suggest that a caved-in pipeline may have contributed to the collapse.

The affected road is a vital link connecting Madinaguda, Shanti Nagar Colony, Managar, Prashantnagar, JPNR, and Bollaram. It is heavily trafficked and serves numerous schools in the area. However, the sinkhole was discovered before school dismissal, potentially avoiding harm to students and their transport vehicles.

Authorities suspect that a burst nala pipeline adjacent to the road may have weakened the ground due to water leakage, leading to the sinkhole. Citizens are calling for accountability, urging government departments and officials to address the infrastructure failure and improve transparency and road maintenance.
