DCA warns against improper sale of Hydrogen Peroxide Solution to patients
HYDERABAD: Telangana Drug Control Administration (DCA)issued a stern warning to retail medical pharmacies on Monday, prohibiting the sale of Hydrogen Peroxide Solution labelled as ‘Laboratory Reagent’ to patients.
The DCA reportedly discovered that retail medical shops were selling ‘Hydrogen Peroxide Solution’ labelled as a ‘Laboratory Reagent,’ contravening the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. They stressed that the product sold to patients should conform to the standards outlined in the Indian Pharmacopoeia and must be labelled as ‘Hydrogen Peroxide Solution IP.
According to DCA, only ‘Hydrogen Peroxide Solution IP’ should have been sold to patients by retail medical shops, with its Maximum Retail Price (MRP) complying with the ‘Ceiling Price’ set by the Central Government.
Hydrogen Peroxide Solution, utilised for antiseptic and therapeutic purposes, falls under the category of a ‘drug’ as per the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The DCA emphasised that it must adhere to the standards outlined in the current edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP-2022).
The drug Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 6 percent is under price control as per Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013 and hence its MRP should align in accordance with the ceiling price fixed by National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA).
DCA Director General V.B Kamalasan Reddy warned retail medical shops and Hydrogen Peroxide Solution manufacturers to strictly adhere to these requirements. He said that stringent legal action would be taken against violators.
