Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, conducted two raids on January 3, 2025, resulting in the seizure of illegally manufactured drugs and unauthorized medicine stocks.

In the first raid, DCA officials uncovered Alcium-D3 Tablets (Calcium with Vitamin D3) being sold under the guise of a food product in Kothapet Village, Uppal Mandal, Medchal-Malkajgiri District. The product was found to have been manufactured by Hindustan Nutraceuticals Inc., located in Industrial Park, Uppal. The company falsely claimed the product as a food/nutraceutical item despite being classified as a drug under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940.

The product, marketed under an FSSAI food license (FSSAI License No. 10017047000796), was not manufactured following the required Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) or quality standards prescribed in the Indian Pharmacopoeia. The seized drugs, worth ₹1.5 lakhs, were being sold in violation of regulations. Manufacturing drugs without a valid drug license is punishable by up to five years in prison.

The raid was led by Dr. B. Lakshmi Narayana, Drugs Inspector, Uppal, and G. Indira Priyadarshini, Drugs Inspector, Habsiguda, under the supervision of G. Sreenivas, Assistant Director, Shameepet.

In a separate operation, DCA officials raided an unlicensed medical shop run by Sarangi Naga Shiva in Shivaji Nagar, Allapur, Kukatpally, Medchal-Malkajgiri District. The shop was found to be illegally stocking a large quantity of medicines without a drug license.

59 varieties of medicines, including antibiotics, analgesics, anti-ulcer, anti-diabetic, and anti-hypertensive drugs, were seized during the raid. The total value of the seized stock was estimated at ₹30,000.

Dr. N. Sahaja, Drug Inspector in Kukatpally; E. Naresh Reddy, Drug Inspector in Balanagar; and Dr. R. Geethanjali, Drug Inspector in Prashanthnagar, conducted the raid under the supervision of G. Sreenivas and T. Rajamouli, Assistant Directors in Medchal and Hyderabad, respectively. Samples were taken for analysis, and further investigations are ongoing.
The DCA also warned that wholesalers or dealers supplying medicines to unlicensed entities would face stringent action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Suppliers must verify that the recipient entity holds a valid drug license before delivering medicines.

V.B. Kamalasan Reddy, DCA’s Director General, urged the public to report any illegal manufacturing or distribution of drugs, including narcotics and psychotropic substances, through the DCA’s toll-free helpline at 1800-599-6969, which is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on working days.
