Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, on December 2, 2024, conducted a raid on the clinic of an unqualified practitioner, Banothu Srinu, operating in Beerappagadda, Uppal Khalsa Village, Medchal-Malkajgiri District. The clinic, named Anjali Clinic, was found to be stocking and selling various medications without the necessary drug license.

Acting on credible information, DCA officials raided Srinu’s premises at Srinagar Colony, Road No. 2, Beerappagadda. During the raid, they discovered 17 types of medicines, including antibiotics, steroids, antifungal drugs, and analgesics, stored unlawfully. The seized stock was valued at Rs. 20,500.

Several antibiotics, including ceftriaxone and amoxycillin, were among the drugs confiscated. The indiscriminate sale of antibiotics by unqualified individuals can have severe health repercussions, such as the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which threatens public health globally.

Additionally, the raid uncovered the presence of steroids, such as Dexamethasone. Misuse of steroids can lead to serious health issues, including immune system suppression, hormonal imbalances, muscle and bone weakness, cardiovascular problems, and psychological effects. The sale of steroids by unqualified persons poses significant risks to public health.

The raid was carried out by Drugs Inspectors B. Lakshmi Narayana (Uppal) and P. Ambedkar (Medipally), who seized the drugs and collected samples for further analysis. The DCA has initiated further investigation and will take appropriate legal action against all offenders involved.

The DCA has also warned wholesalers and dealers who supply medicines to unlicensed individuals. Those who distribute drugs without verifying the recipient’s drug license are liable to punishment under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Wholesalers and dealers are urged to ensure that their clients hold valid drug licenses before supplying any medicines.

V.B. Kamalasan Reddy, DCA’s Director General, urged the public to report any illegal drug manufacturing or distribution activities, including narcotics and psychotropic substances, in residential, commercial, or industrial areas. Complaints can be made through the DCA’s Toll-Free Number, 1800-599-6969, which is operational from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all working days.
