DCA seizes Rs. 65k worth of cough syrup

Hyderabad: Officials from the Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, conducted a raid on Akhil Life Sciences, a drug manufacturing unit located at Prashanth Nagar, IDA, Kukatpally, Medchal-Malkajgiri District on September 9, 2024. The raid uncovered that Akhil Life Sciences was engaged in the unlicensed production of Glycoril Cough Syrup, which contains Terbutaline Sulphate, Ambroxol HCl, Guaiphenesin, and Menthol. During the operation, DCA officials seized 635 bottles of Glycoril Cough Syrup, each containing 100 ml, with a total stock value of Rs. 65,000.

The products were identified as Batch No.: ATG 401, Mfg. Date: 09/2024, Exp. Date: 08/2026, and were manufactured by Akhil Life Sciences without the requisite drug manufacturing license.

Gamy Pharmaceuticals was marketing the syrup at Flat No. 7, My Enclave, Sai Colony Extension Belethur, Kadugodi, Bangalore – 560 067. Additionally, printed labels for the product were seized from C. Bhaskar Reddy, Proprietor of Akhil Life Sciences.

The unit’s manufacturing activities were deemed unauthorised and lacked compliance with the Drug and Cosmetics Act and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) under Schedule M of the Drugs Rules.

Drugs Inspectors M. Sreebindu from Prashanth Nagar and N. Sahaja from Kukatpally led the raid. Samples of the seized products were collected for further analysis.

Unlicensed drug manufacturing is a serious violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, punishable by imprisonment of up to five years. Such drugs may not meet the quality standards set by the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) and the Drugs Rules, potentially posing risks to public health.

The public is encouraged to report any suspected illegal drug manufacturing activities or other complaints related to medicines to the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana. Further investigations are underway, and appropriate actions will be taken against those involved.
