Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana has uncovered an illegal operation selling steroid drugs to bodybuilders in Hyderabad. Acting on credible information, DCA officials raided an unlicensed premises named ‘Rakesh Distributor’ in Esamiya Bazar, Koti, on September 18 and 19, 2024. During the raid, officials seized a significant stock of steroid medicines valued at approximately Rs. 2 lakhs.

A total of 22 varieties of steroid drugs, including androgen and anabolic steroids, were discovered, indicating a high potential for abuse among gym-goers. The operation, run by Rakesh Kanodia, was found to be operating without a valid drug license.

The misuse of these substances poses serious health risks, including cardiovascular issues, liver damage, mood swings, and hormonal imbalances. Long-term abuse can lead to severe complications such as infertility, kidney failure, and psychiatric disorders.

DCA officers V. Ajay, Drugs Inspector from Goshamahal, and P. Santosh, Drugs Inspector from Mehdipatnam, conducted the operation and collected samples for analysis. Further investigations are underway, and action will be taken against all offenders as per the law.

Rs. 1.01 lakhs worth of medicines seized in Miyapur

In another operation, DCA officials raided Srikanth Neurocentre, a hospital located at RBR Complex, Miyapur, Rangareddy District, on September 18 and 19, 2024. Dr. Boini Srikanth Yadav was found illegally operating a medical shop within the hospital without a valid drug license.

During this raid, DCA officers uncovered an unauthorised stock of medicines, with 31 varieties discovered on the premises. This led to the seizure of stock worth Rs. 1.01 lakhs. Officers A. Shylaja Rani and D. Swetha Bindu participated in the raid, and samples were taken for analysis.

Wholesalers and dealers supplying medicines to such unlicensed entities are also subject to penalties under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Stringent action will be taken against them, highlighting the necessity of ensuring that recipient entities hold a valid drug license prior to supplying medicines.

The DCA issues drug licenses in accordance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, which mandates that stocking and selling drugs without a license can result in imprisonment for up to five years.
