Cyberabad sees slight drop in fatal accidents, but non-fatal accidents surge

Hyderabad: During the Cyberabad Annual Review Meeting on December 24, 2024, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty presented the annual report, revealing key statistics and insights into the region’s traffic and road safety issues for 2023 and 2024.
The comparison of road accident cases between 2023 and 2024 shows a slight decline in fatal accidents. In 2023, there were 812 fatal accidents, whereas, in 2024, the number dropped slightly to 805. However, non-fatal road accidents saw a significant rise, with 1,727 cases reported in 2023 compared to 2,332 in 2024. The number of non-injury road accidents also increased from 497 in 2023 to 692 in 2024, indicating a general rise in the volume of road incidents, even if fatalities were slightly reduced.
A detailed analysis of fatal accidents by the type of vehicle involved shows some interesting trends. The highest number of fatalities continued to be among motorcyclists, with 444 reported deaths in 2023, rising to 465 in 2024. Pedestrian fatalities also remained significant, with 299 deaths in 2023 and 261 deaths in 2024. Other categories, such as cyclists, auto trolleys, light motor vehicles, and heavy vehicles, had comparatively fewer fatalities, but some categories, like auto trolleys and light motor vehicles, saw an increase in deaths from 2023 to 2024. The total fatalities in 2023 were 866, while in 2024, the number slightly decreased to 842.
The report also highlighted a comparison of self-road accidents, which involve only the vehicle itself. In 2023, there were 328 self-road accidents in Cyberabad, with 204 fatalities and 124 non-fatal accidents. This number increased in 2024, with 382 self-road accidents, 225 of which were fatal and 156 non-fatal.
Regarding accidents by road type, there was a clear shift in patterns. National and state highways saw a reduction in fatalities from 337 in 2023 to 280 in 2024, though non-fatal accidents on these roads rose significantly from 696 in 2023 to 1,008 in 2024. The Outer Ring Road (ORR) also witnessed a small increase in fatalities and non-fatal accidents, from 37 fatalities and 54 non-fatal accidents in 2023 to 43 fatalities and 135 non-fatal accidents in 2024.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area experienced a notable increase in non-fatal accidents, rising from 127 in 2023 to 307 in 2024. Overall, the total number of accidents across all roads increased from 3,036 in 2023 to 3,829 in 2024.
In terms of enforcement, the Cyberabad Traffic Police issued a substantial number of challans in 2024. The number of spot challans increased from 601,396 in 2023 to 685,545 in 2024. The e-challan system, however, saw a decline, with 20,41,388 e-challans issued in 2023, dropping to 15,74,997 in 2024. The total penalty imposed for traffic violations rose from ₹104.28 crore in 2023 to ₹111.82 crore in 2024. Additionally, the traffic police suspended a total of 7,181 driving licenses in 2024 due to violations.
