Cyberabad police accused of detaining youth illegally; Human Rights Body seeks report

Hyderabad: The Telangana Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of a complaint filed by a woman named Alivelu, who alleged that her 22-year-old son, Mekala Kalyan, was illegally taken into custody by police personnel from Kadthal Police Station, Mahabubnagar district, on April 28, 2025.
According to the complaint, six police personnel arrived at Alivelu’s residence in Almasguda, Hyderabad, at around 8:30 a.m. and took Kalyan away in their vehicle, along with his mobile phone. Alivelu stated that the officers did not provide any explanation or documentation and failed to inform the family of the grounds for the detention.
Later that day, around 3:00 p.m., Alivelu reportedly received a call from her son’s phone. She claims the caller, believed to be a police official, informed her that Kalyan would neither be produced before a court nor would his location be disclosed.
The complaint, submitted through Advocate M. Amarnath, further alleges that the police refused to answer subsequent calls and that Kalyan may have been subjected to physical assault while in custody.
Alivelu stated that the family attempted to approach Kadthal Police Station for information but received no cooperation. She expressed concern that her son was being held without a formal case registered and feared he was being subjected to third-degree interrogation methods.
The Human Rights Commission, treating the matter with urgency, has directed the Commissioner of Police, Cyberabad, to submit a detailed report. The case has been scheduled for further review on May 5, 2025.
