How counterflow BRT could improve bus travel in Cyberabad

Telangana Strengthens Road Safety With New Traffic Management Bureau

HYDERABAD: Cyberabad Police held a joint coordination meeting on Thursday to assess the feasibility of a counterflow Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system for Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) buses.

The meeting took place at the main conference hall of the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate. Officials reviewed the findings of a traffic flow, traffic management and BRT survey conducted by FRIP with the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC).

The proposed counterflow BRT corridor covers JNTU Junction, HITEC City, Raidurgam Metro Station and Waverock. It also extends towards the Financial District and connected routes.

Sunpreet Singh, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Cyberabad, attended the meeting. Deputy Commissioners of Police from Traffic-I and Traffic-II, the Additional DCP of Traffic-II and ACPs from Madhapur and Kukatpally also took part.

Officials from SCSC, FRIP, CMC, TGIIC and TGSRTC attended the meeting. The City Head of CityFlo Travels was also present.

Officials reviewed traffic flow, peak-hour movement, congestion, bottlenecks and conflict points along the proposed corridor. They also examined plans for a dedicated counterflow lane for TGSRTC buses.

The officials discussed how the proposed lane could affect other traffic. They also reviewed existing problems along the corridor.

These included inadequate bus bays, roadside parking and encroachments. Officials also noted poor lane discipline, pedestrian crossings, unauthorised vehicle stops and junction conflicts. The lack of adequate pedestrian facilities also came up for discussion.

Sunpreet Singh directed FRIP to reassess the proposed counterflow BRT corridor from JNTU to Raidurgam Metro Station. The review will also cover Waverock, the Financial District and connected routes.

FRIP will focus on practical difficulties, operational challenges and traffic flow. Singh also directed the agency to conduct a physical trial using buses on both sides of the road.

The trial will help officials assess actual traffic movement, merging conditions and the operational feasibility of the proposed counterflow BRT system.
