HYDERABAD: Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 534 motorists for drunk driving during a special weekend enforcement drive conducted across the commissionerate.

According to officials, two-wheelers accounted for 435 cases, three-wheelers for 18, four-wheelers for 79, and heavy vehicles for two. Among them, 478 motorists had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml, 34 between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, and 22 between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml.

All offenders will be produced before the court.

Police warn of stringent action under new law

The police reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence. Those causing fatal accidents while intoxicated will be charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The section carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine.

296 cases disposed of last week

From October 6 to 11, courts disposed of 296 drunk driving cases. Of these, 264 offenders were fined, 32 were sentenced to jail, and 35 were assigned social service. The jail sentences included 18 for one day, 11 for two days, and three for three days.

Cyberabad Traffic Police urged citizens to avoid driving after consuming alcohol to ensure road safety.
