Hyderabad cybercrime police arrest accused in online trading fraud case

HYDERABAD: The Cyber Crime Police of Hyderabad City Police have identified and taken down 124 social media profiles that were promoting illegal online betting and gaming platforms through paid advertisements.

Officials said the action followed sustained cyber surveillance and intelligence based tracking conducted over the past month.

539 paid advertisements detected during digital monitoring

According to the police, the identified profiles were running 539 paid advertisements across various social media platforms. These promotions targeted users in India and advertised several online betting and gaming applications and websites.

Investigators found that the advertisements promised easy money, assured returns, bonuses and referral commissions. Authorities said such messages were designed to lure vulnerable users, particularly young people.

The profiles were circulating promotional content, referral links and inducement-based schemes encouraging the public to participate in unlawful wagering and betting activities.

Profiles reported and removed to prevent further circulation

As a preventive measure, all 124 profiles were reported to the concerned social media platforms and subsequently taken down to stop the spread of illegal promotional content.

Police said further investigation is under way to identify the individuals operating these profiles and to trace the financial channels linked to the betting networks.

Legal action will be initiated against those found responsible under relevant provisions of law, officials said.

Public advised against engaging with illegal betting platforms

The Cyber Crime unit issued an advisory warning that online betting and gambling activities are prohibited in Telangana, and participation or promotion of such activities may attract penal action.

Officials said many online betting and gaming apps operate from foreign jurisdictions and function illegally in India. These platforms often attract users with promises of high returns, bonuses and referral commissions, which can lead to financial losses and misuse of personal and banking data.

Police also cautioned that individuals sharing or promoting such links on social media may face legal consequences.

Citizens were urged not to download or register on unauthorised betting platforms and to avoid sharing referral links or promotional material related to such applications.

Suspicious advertisements, links or profiles promoting illegal betting can be reported to the nearest Cyber Crime police station, the national cybercrime portal www.cybercrime.gov.in, or through the toll-free helpline 1930.

The Hyderabad Cyber Crime unit said it remains committed to ensuring a safe cyberspace and urged citizens to remain cautious while engaging in online trading, investment activities and social media interactions.
